This GD original with lyrics (mostly) by Phil Lesh wasn't officially released for over 35 years after it was written.

No Turn Left Unstoned? Thought it was on a DP.

You mean Cardboard Cowboy (No Left Turn Unstoned)? Only ever played live once (7/17/1966), and a demo version was released in a very limited production with Phil's book.

They did it in Vancouver a week or two later, too. And probably more times than that, we just don't have them on tape.

And the day before.

Love those dribbling mashed potatoes. Ever heard the show -- I think in '69, seemingly in reference to some lines in St Stephen -- where Bob suddenly blurts out, "Funniest thing I've ever heard"? Well, actually, it wasn't. This was.

The brackets indicate "best guesses" on lyrics that are uncertain, cuz no one will admit to being able to remember them. Exhibit Number One in Why Phil Did Not Become the GD's Lyricist:

When the cardboard cowboy dreams and his cornucopia
Opens up the sky and blows my mind to the corners of
[Far in bar rent shine] running beneath high trembling dove
Leaving me transfixed and raving in the wake of the hammer blow

On my way out of town I stumbled on the shards of a hungry [scream]
And further up into the backdoor circle, where the [power and crystal sea]
[Could this go rise by all allow brater] on the strength of an anguished sigh
And a paranoid re-entry blanket flies sleeping on a sling shot ride

As my patchwork [world/quilt] unravels, I ramble yes too high
[From the looping antrobus with his magic meant so high]
Shining out a masquerade from dawn to alpha plus
Watching mashed potatoes dribble in the heat of reality's earth

[For the intro doom from] running to him
It wasn't ever so
Turns the wall into the sky above me, there is no place to run

OK, this is too weird. Probably (hopefully) by the time you folks in the US time zones see this, it'll have been removed by the Powers That Be -- but this is the second time I posted these lyrics, and EACH TIME it almost instantly drew spam. (See below, if it's still up.) The first was an Indian outsourcing thing, and I thought it might be related to my IP address. This appears to be -- what? Vietnamese? (Obviously didn't click on it.) So ... dang ... what IS it in the lyrics to Cardboard Cowboy that trigger Instant Spam?!?

One guess: The word combinations appear so randomly generated that spam recognizes Cardboard Cowboy/The Monster/No Turn Left Unstoned as A Creature After Its Own Heart, and thus attempts to make contact in order to share its innermost spammy feelings and produce little Spam Babies. Will it work? Will Cardboard Cowboy and Spam spawn little Cardboard Mashed Potato Spamlets of Global Domination? Stay tuned ...

Oh, my God, you gave me a great laugh this morning, paranoid re-entry blankets and "I ramble yes too high," yes, Phil, you are rambling too high, and then the whole thing's mistaken for a spammer's mating call. Too funny!!!
